Positano is the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast. The colorful cliffside houses, winding streets filled with boutiques, and the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea at your feet. But as dreamy as it is, the real magic happens when you step beyond Positano. From glamorous islands to quiet fishing villages and ancient ruins, some of the best experiences in Italy come from Amalfi Coast day trips.
During my time on the Amalfi coast, I made it my mission to explore the area one trip at a time. Whether you’re here for history, food, nature, or just a change of scenery, these day trips will add depth (and a little adventure) to your Amalfi Coast itinerary.

Capri: The Iconic Island Escape
When people talk about Amalfi Coast day trips, Capri usually tops the list. Just a 30–40 minute ferry ride from Positano, this island blends natural beauty with Italian chic.
Getting There
Hop on a ferry from Positano’s main marina. The ride itself is a highlight and you’ll glide past cliffs, hidden coves, and colorful seaside villages before Capri comes into view.
What to Do in Capri
- Blue Grotto: The island’s most famous attraction, where sunlight hits the cave water at just the right angle, turning it into a glowing neon blue. Yes, it’s touristy, but absolutely worth it.
- Anacapri & Monte Solaro: Take the chairlift up Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. The views of the Bay of Naples are breathtaking.
- Gardens of Augustus: A peaceful garden with sweeping views of the Faraglioni rocks. Perfect for photos.
- Shopping: Even if you don’t plan to splurge, Capri town’s boutiques are fun to browse — from handmade sandals to luxury fashion.
Insider Tip
Capri gets packed with day-trippers by midday. Aim to arrive early and head straight to Anacapri before exploring the busier parts of the island.
Amalfi: History and Charm
Amalfi, the namesake of the coast, is a lively town steeped in history. Once a powerful maritime republic, today it offers a mix of culture, architecture, and seaside relaxation.
Getting There
From Positano, you can reach Amalfi by bus or ferry. The bus ride is scenic but winding, while the ferry offers sweeping coastal views.
What to Do in Amalfi
- Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi): The town’s landmark, with its grand staircase and mix of Byzantine, Norman, and Gothic styles. Don’t miss the ornate interior.
- Museo della Carta (Paper Museum): Amalfi has a centuries-old paper-making tradition. This small museum shows how it’s still done by hand.
- Beach time: The pebbled shoreline right by town is perfect for a swim or just people-watching.
Insider Tip
Wander off the main square into Amalfi’s narrow lanes. That’s where you’ll find artisan shops, quiet courtyards, and fewer crowds.
Ravello: Music, Views, and Peace
High above the Amalfi Coast sits Ravello, a serene town known for its gardens, villas, and music festivals. If you need a break from the coastal bustle, this is the place.
Getting There
From Positano, take a bus or ferry to Amalfi, then switch to a bus that climbs up to Ravello. The winding ride is worth every twist.
What to Do in Ravello
- Villa Rufolo: Its lush gardens inspired Wagner, and it’s not hard to see why. The terraces look straight out of a painting.
- Villa Cimbrone & the Terrace of Infinity: Standing here feels like you’re on the edge of the world, with endless sea views stretching below.
- Ravello Festival: If you visit in summer, catch a classical concert in one of the villas’ gardens. Few places are more magical to hear music.
Insider Tip
Bring a book or journal. Ravello’s calm atmosphere is perfect for slowing down and soaking in the moment.

Sorrento: Lively and Authentic
Sorrento, perched on dramatic cliffs, is a fantastic blend of tradition and modern vibes. It’s also one of the easiest Amalfi Coast day trips from Positano.
Getting There
Both buses and ferries run regularly from Positano to Sorrento.
What to Do in Sorrento
- Piazza Tasso: The town square is buzzing with cafes and perfect for people-watching.
- Limoncello Tasting: Sorrento is famous for its lemons. Visit a small distillery for a sip of this tangy, sweet liqueur.
- Marina Grande: A colorful fishing village where I enjoyed a simple but perfect seafood lunch.
Insider Tip
Walk along the cliffs at sunset. The view of the Bay of Naples is unforgettable.
Positano may be your base, but the real beauty of the Amalfi Coast is found in its variety. From the glamour of Capri to the serenity of Ravello, the ancient streets of Pompeii to the lively energy of Naples, these Amalfi Coast day trips let you experience it all.
Don’t just stay in Positano. Take the ferry, hop on a bus, lace up your walking shoes and let the Amalfi Coast surprise you, one day trip at a time.
